Utpanna Ekadashi is the sacred Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of the Margashirsha month. In the year 2025, this fast will be observed on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Worshipping Lord Vishnu, observing fast, and giving charity on this day destroys sins and grants the devotee Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation).
This Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ekadashi, as it marks the day of the manifestation of Goddess Ekadashi.
What is Utpanna Ekadashi?
Utpanna Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha in the Margashirsha (Aghan) month according to the Sanatan Dharma. It is believed to be the day when Goddess Ekadashi manifested, who killed the demon Murasura and protected Dharma.
Therefore, it is called the “origin day of Ekadashi” or “Utpanna Ekadashi.”
This Ekadashi is considered the mother of all Ekadashis and is also known as the first Ekadashi among all fasts.

The Legend of Utpanna Ekadashi
According to the Padma Purana, in the Satyuga, there was a powerful and tyrannical demon named Mura. He defeated Lord Indra, Agni, Varuna, and other deities and took control of heaven. Terrified, the gods sought refuge in Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu engaged in a fierce battle with Murasura that lasted for five thousand years. Eventually, feeling exhausted, Lord Vishnu went to Badrikashrama in the Himalayas to rest inside a cave. When Murasura saw Lord Vishnu asleep, he entered the cave intending to kill Him.
At that moment, a radiant divine woman emerged from Lord Vishnu’s body. She was luminous and divine. She immediately challenged Murasura and destroyed him in an instant.
When Lord Vishnu awoke and saw this, He was pleased and said —
“O Devi! You have slain my enemy Murasura, therefore you shall be known as the destroyer of all sins and the protector of Dharma. Since you manifested on Ekadashi, you shall be called Ekadashi. Whoever observes a fast on this day will be freed from all sins and attain liberation.”
Thus, this sacred day came to be known as Utpanna Ekadashi.
