Origin of Kanakadhara Stotram-

Once, Guru Shankaracharya went to a Brahmin’s house seeking alms. The Brahmin was righteous and truthful but extremely poor. When his wife saw the great Acharya standing at the door, she was filled with hesitation because they had nothing to offer as alms. After searching her house, she found a single Amla (Indian gooseberry) fruit. With great humility and hesitation, she offered it to the Acharya.
Shankaracharya immediately understood the depth of her poverty and generosity. Moved by her plight, he prayed to Goddess Lakshmi to remove the family’s suffering. Pleased by his heartfelt devotion, Goddess Lakshmi appeared and asked, “O Acharya! Why have you remembered me?”
Shankaracharya humbly explained the miserable condition of the Brahmin family and requested the Goddess to bless them with wealth. In response, Goddess Lakshmi said, “This Brahmin’s destiny does not allow him to attain wealth in this lifetime.”
Hearing this, Shankaracharya prayed again, saying, “O Mother! Even if he did not perform meritorious deeds in his past life, in this life, despite his extreme poverty, he has selflessly offered alms to a mendicant like me. Does this act of virtue not hold enough power to transform his fate?”
Seeing the depth of Shankaracharya’s compassion and devotion, Goddess Lakshmi could not refuse his request. She showered gold upon the poor Brahmin’s house, instantly filling it with immense wealth and prosperity, ending their poverty forever.
Since Goddess Lakshmi had blessed the household with a rain of gold, this hymn came to be known as Kanakadhara Stotram.
